The History of VanCity Sports
Club

VanCity Sports Club is a non-profit society providing Muslim men and women in the Greater Vancouver area ongoing opportunities to engage in recreational and competitive sports for all ages while building a sense of community spirit. At the same time, athletes have the opportunity to participate in sports locally as well as travel to tournaments and participate against other Muslim athletes across and broad spectrum of sports.

1970 to 1990

In the early days, recreational soccer and hockey were the main sports with other members also playing tennis, squash and golf. A Shia Muslim Community of BC soccer team was formed and played against local youth and men’s teams in Greater Vancouver. In 1988, volleyball was introduced starting at an outdoor park and then moved to an indoor gym at Simon Fraser University. The Jaffery Sports Club was officially formed with over 45 members. The club played against other teams from Vancouver, Seattle and Edmonton before venturing out to their first tournament in NY in 1989. This led to volleyball becoming a key sport for the community and eventually led to the VanCity Sports Club being created.

1991 to 2010

In this era, sports really started to take off in Vancouver. The community became actively involved in participating in more volleyball tournaments and attending more sports festivals. With increased enthusiasm, the community participated and hosted the Haider Cup Golf Tournament throughout Greater Vancouver and Whistler. The completion of the Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre has also contributed to greater participation in a variety of sports with increased participation from the ladies as well as marking the beginning of the annual Fallen Stars sports festival honouring the memory of a different pioneer of the community each year.

2011 to Today

This era saw an explosion in both men’s and women’s sports explode in the community. More Haider Cup golf tournaments were organized and participation increased. The community organized an annual Fallen Stars sports festival that honoured the memory of different pioneers of our community each year. The festival included sports such as volleyball, hockey, badminton, table tennis, soccer and basketball. Vancouver hosted its first men’s and women’s invitational volleyball tournament in 2017 with teams participating from across North America. With increased participation and interest in the various sports by our local community members and an infusion of a new generation of athletes has resulted in the formation of VanCity Sports Club. It is an umbrella for all the community’s sporting activities and participation. The VanCity Cup Men’s and Women’s volleyball tournament will be the largest and most exciting undertaking by the community as teams are expected from across North America and Europe.
